Grain sound filtering

There are several places in the processing chain where filtering of the grains can be done. We are considering 3 options:

1. for each grain separately
Would only be useful if all grains are being filtered in a different way. So it would require randomization on the filter settings as well.
May add a lot more CPU consumption if a lot of grains are playing (dense structures).

2. for the mix-down of the grains audio before it is fed back into the feedback loop
One filter. Doesn't cause (much) extra CPU. Filters the sound more each time it goes through the feedback loop.

3. at the output stage
One filter. Doesn't cause (much) extra CPU. Filters the output as it is being created now. Not in the feedback loop.

We could start with 2. and 3. and then add in 1.

Let us know what you think.

I'd vote for number one. I used some Csound code with per-grain-filtering capabilities, and it sounds totally unique. I've eversince been looking for a plugin that does that, but i haven't come across anything yet. That feature would set Saltygrain apart from all other granular tools.
Three is the most boring option but it can be useful. Still you could also just add a filter to your daw channel to have that effect.

The best thing would be to have the filter placement switchable somehow.

Nice to see filtering coming soon!

1. my vote too. I've never seen that type of filtering on a granulator plugin yet. I've already tried to create this in Reaktor but haven't succeed so far (I must admit I'm not a Reaktor guru, it's probably doable). Like monas said, this feature would totally set SaltryGrain apart from all its rivals. A true unique feature :)

2. my second choice. Could definitely create interesting sounds not achievable otherwise.

3. my last choice. If I understand well your explanation, that's pretty much like adding a simple filter at the end of the SaltyGrain chain. Every DAW's and musicians have filter plugins nowadays, so theoretically this is already possible. For output stage filtering, I rather prefer using the filter of my choice instead.

Koen, you can put me on your Beta tester list if you want, I'll be glad to help and test any versions before an official update.

Thanks for the support!

Alright, my conclusion: we could add two things:
1. single filter in or after feedback loop (switchable)
2. more interestingly per-grain filtering, hopefully not too CPU intensive
I've put this on our feature request list for a future release.
Thanks for the feedback!

Fantastic! Looking forward to it :)

Hi!

How’s the filter development going? Any interesting progression? Can’t wait it too see it implemented into SaltyGrain.

Here for testing and helping anytime, let me know.

Peace.

Hi Neon Breath,
we've already had a look at how we could do it, but development hasn't started yet.
We're currently working hard on a new product + an upcoming event for end of March, but it's definitely on the todo list for the next update release.
We'll let you know when there is a testable version. Thanks!

Great news Koen. Thanks for the update, and looking forward to that new product!

Hey guys, we're moving from our forums to using zendesk to improve our support.
I've copied this forum post here: https://samplesumo.zendesk.com/entries/23441126-Grain-sound-filtering
The easiest is to go there and write a reply, that way you'll be updated automatically if there is more input from us!
